Types of Glass for Commercial Buildings: Specification Guide

A comprehensive specification guide detailing monolithic, laminated, double-glazed, solar-control Low-E, and ceramic frit architectural glass for modern commercial projects.

Key Engineering Takeaways

  • Tempered and laminated safety glass are mandatory for commercial envelopes under international building codes.
  • Low-E double glazing combines solar reflection with high thermal insulation.
  • Acoustic interlayers cancel resonant traffic frequencies, ensuring quiet interior workspaces.

Primary Glass Families: Float, Tempered & Laminated

Standard float (annealed) glass is rarely used alone in modern commercial exteriors due to low impact resistance and dangerous fracture characteristics. Instead, commercial specifications require Thermal Toughened (Tempered) safety glass conforming to BS EN 12150 (4 to 5 times stronger than annealed glass) or Laminated Safety Glass conforming to BS EN 14449, which uses a polymer interlayer to hold shattered fragments intact upon impact.

Insulated Glazing Units (IGU / DGU)

Double-glazed units separate two glass panes with a hermetically sealed argon or air cavity. By incorporating spectrally selective Low-E coatings on surface #2 (the inside face of the outer pane), the unit reflects long-wave infrared solar heat while allowing visible light to pass through, reducing the building Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) to below 0.22.

Acoustic Laminated Glass

By substituting standard PVB interlayers with specialized acoustic viscoelastic PVB, glass panels can break sound vibration transmission across urban traffic and aircraft frequencies, achieving sound reduction ratings (Rw) of 38 to 45 dB.

Ceramic Frit & Screen-Printed Glass

Ceramic frit glass involves baking mineral enamel patterns onto the glass surface during the tempering cycle. In addition to creating striking architectural patterns, frit patterns function as permanent microscopic solar louvers, reducing glare and solar heat gain.
